Key to the Temple of Memory in Puławy

The Key to the Temple of Memory in Puławy, created in 1804 or 1805 according to a design by Henryk Ittar, measures 32 cm by 15.5 cm. The key, probably commissioned by Maria Wirtemberska née Czartoryska, was made of steel, brass, and gold, in the shape of a caduceus—a winged staff of Hermes entwined by serpents—topped with a pine cone. On the four-sided shaft is an inscription: “ΜΝΗΜΗΣ ΑΝΟΙΓΩ ΙΕΡΟΝ” (Greek for "I open the Temple of Memory") and the initials I.C. (Izabela Czartoryska) and the date Aº (Anno) MDCCCI (1801) on the reverse. The key has survived to this day and is currently part of the collection of the Czartoryski Museum in Krakow.
